The College of Arts and Sciences and Texas A&M University–Central Texas will present a faculty spotlight featuring Dr. Michelle Dietert at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19 in the Bernie Beck Lecture Hall in Founder’s Hall on campus.
A professor of sociology at A&M–Central Texas, Dietert’s research focuses on LGBTQ+ experiences specializing in qualitative research methods, sociological theory, sexuality and gender. Her research focuses on the experiences of transgender and non-binary individuals covering topics such as workplace discrimination, the socialization experiences of transgender youth, and the experiences of transgender veterans and active duty service members.
Dietert’s presentation, “Invisible No More: The Journey to Understand Transgender Experiences,” takes a look at what it means to be transgender and non-binary. In her research, Dietert looks at how the meaning of being a gendered person has changed over time. Her presentation will focus on “one sociologist’s journey to understanding how those who do not conform to binary gender norms navigate their lives around those constructs.”
Admission to the faculty spotlight is free and open to the public and students studying all academic disciplines are encouraged to attend.
