President Donald Trump's impeachment trial began Tuesday, and many Central Texans are paying close attention.

"Fairly important procedural decisions have to be made," said Professor Jeffrey Dixon, a political science expert at A&M Central Texas. Professor Dixon told 25 News this could shape the trial.

"The Senate is laying out the rules for the impeachment trial- what kind of witnesses will be called under what circumstances, how long the sides will have to make their opening statements, whether House evidence will be the only thing admitted, or if additional evidence will be admitted beyond what the house has already looked at," said Professor Dixon.

Professor Dixon said while this could impact the trial procedurally, it should not change the outcome. "Now it's the House's job, the House Manager's job, to act as prosecutor and to convince enough Senators that the president is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors," said Professor Dixon.

The outcome should be revealed in just a couple days.

"The working plan seems to be about a three day trial, so we're not looking at a process that is going to stretch on for a very long time," said Professor Dixon.
