Prominent author and scholar Dr. Ashley Farmer will present a lecture titled “Black Women Intellectuals Who Transformed Black Power" on February 27 in the Bill Yowell Conference Center. The presentation will discuss how black women’s intellectual contributions impacted the black power movement and American culture. The event will start with a meet and greet from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., followed by Dr. Farmer’s presentation at 6 p.m.
Dr. Farmer is an assistant professor of African and African Diaspora Studies and History at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Jerry Jones, Dean of the College of Arts and Science, and Horace Grace of the Center for African American Studies at Central Texas College selected Dr. Farmer due to her numerous articles, speeches, and scholarship in African diaspora studies in American culture.
Larry Davis, Chief Diversity Officer at A&M-Central Texas and event organizer, believes she is a powerful representation of black intellectualism.
“She is a very exceptional example of the [traditions] that we're highlighting in this year’s lecture series,” said Davis.
Davis hopes attendees will leave the event with a sense of celebration and pride.
“People should come to this event because it is celebrating black history and it is showing the significant impact and contributions of African Americans to this country … it paints the picture of a positive powerful contribution, without which America wouldn't be as great as it is,” said Davis. “If any significant part of America is left out and not highlighted and celebrated, then all of America hurts and lacks because of that.”
